The shape
The Elmswell is built from soft curves. The backrest is a rounded oval, gently curved to the back, and it sits on two wooden supports that rise from the rear legs, with an open gap between it and the seat. That gap is what keeps the chair from looking heavy around a table. The seat is rounded too, with a 6cm foam-padded cushion, and the whole chair stands on four subtly tapered legs in a warm walnut-toned finish. It is armless, so it tucks in close.
Five chenilles
Chenille is a soft, textured weave with a slightly nubbly surface, warmer to sit on than a flat fabric. All five colours share the same walnut-toned frame, so the choice is only about the room.
Beige is a soft ivory-beige, the lightest of the five. It brightens a dining room and sits easily with pale or mid-toned timber.
Khaki is a pale greige with fine grey flecks: neutral like the beige, but a touch cooler and a little more forgiving of everyday use.
Camel is a mottled, warm taupe-brown that picks up the walnut tone of the frame. It suits a warm, wood-heavy room.
Green is a muted olive, an earthy colour that brings some life to a neutral scheme and looks good with natural wood and plants.
Dark Grey is a deep slate with a lightly mottled finish, the most practical of the five and the one that looks smartest against a pale wall.
Sizing it up
At 50cm wide, the Elmswell fits our rule of thumb from how many dining chairs fit around your table: about 60cm of table edge per person, so two a side suits a table of about 120cm or longer. The seat is 48.5cm high, a little taller than many dining chairs, so if your table has a deep apron, measure the gap beneath it first.
Mixing colours
Because every colour shares the same frame and shape, two pairs in different colours still read as a set. Beige at the ends and Green along the sides, or Khaki with Dark Grey, are easy ways to add interest without the table looking mismatched. Our guide to matching dining chair colours to your table has more pairings.
Living with it
Vacuum the chenille with a soft brush attachment and blot spills straight away rather than rubbing them. Wipe the wooden frame with a dry or lightly damp cloth. The levelling feet stop it rocking on an uneven floor; set them once after assembly.
Other chenille and upholstered chairs
The Sienna is another chenille dining chair, on black metal legs. For a curved wing back in cream fabric or faux leather, see the Elmsworth. For more on choosing, read how to choose dining chairs, or browse all the dining chairs.
