Accent Chair or Lounge Chair? How to Choose the Right One
Accent chair or lounge chair? We explain the real difference, where each one works, how to get the size right and how to style it, so you buy the seat you'll actually use.

The accent chair collection
A rounded seat and a low, gently reclined back, wrapped in soft teddy sherpa and set on a sculpted wooden base in a warm brown. It is armless and sits low, so it reads as a soft, sculptural shape rather than a bulky armchair, and it comes with a matching lumbar cushion.

The Calverley is built from two soft, rounded pieces: a deep cushioned seat and a low back that leans gently backwards. There are no arms, so from the front it reads as one smooth, pebble-like form. Underneath, two shaped wooden side pieces in a warm brown run front to back and curve down into tapered feet, which lifts the upholstery off the floor and gives the chair a clear outline. A matching rectangular lumbar cushion sits against the back.
Sherpa is a dense, curly pile that feels warm and soft to the touch, and it suits a chair like this, made for sinking into. It is close in look to bouclé, but fluffier; our guide to bouclé versus chenille covers how the textured fabrics compare.
White is a soft, warm white. Against the brown base it looks clean and light, and it suits a pale or neutral room, a bedroom especially.
Green is a muted, earthy green that sits well with the wood of the base and with plants and natural textures. It is the one to choose if you want a little colour without anything loud.
Black gives the rounded shape the most definition. The curly texture shows up clearly in the dark fabric, and it looks striking against a light wall or floor.
At 73cm wide and 82.5cm deep, the Calverley takes up about the floor space of a compact armchair, but because it is armless and only 73cm high it looks lighter. The 41cm seat is lower than many chairs, which suits a relaxed, lean-back way of sitting: a reading corner, the end of a bedroom, or a spot by the window. Leave room in front of it for your legs and a side table within reach. If you are still deciding between an upright accent chair and something deeper, read accent chair or lounge chair: how to choose.
The sherpa is spot clean only, so deal with spills straight away and blot rather than rub. Run a hand or a soft brush over the pile now and then to keep it lifted where you sit most. Wipe the wooden base with a dry or lightly damp cloth.
For a chunky, low chair that sits right down on the floor, see the Lumo. The Juno is a rounded bouclé barrel chair on a black metal frame, and the Ashton is a high-backed chair in a soft faux fur. Or browse all the accent chairs.

About 73cm wide, 82.5cm deep and 73cm high, with a 41cm seat height. All three colours are the same size.
Sherpa, sometimes called teddy, is a soft fabric with a dense, curly pile, a little like fleece. On the Calverley it is 100% polyester. It looks similar to bouclé but feels softer and fluffier, where bouclé has a tighter, nubbly loop.
No. The back is fixed at a gentle reclined angle, so it always sits in a relaxed position. The lumbar cushion adds support in the small of your back.
Partial assembly is required, and the tools are supplied.
Spot clean only. Blot spills straight away with a clean, damp cloth rather than rubbing them, and brush the sherpa lightly with your hand or a soft brush to lift the pile.
