The shape
The Berwick is a small cabinet that looks considered rather than plain. Its two doors are covered in vertical fluting, the front edges are rounded rather than sharp, and it stands on four round legs in the same finish, which lifts it off the floor and keeps it from looking like a box. A slim gold-tone handle sits along the top edge of each door, the only contrast on the front.
The storage
Behind the doors is one open cupboard with a full-width shelf, which makes two levels for tableware, serving dishes, table linen or the things a hallway collects. The shelf moves between three heights, or lifts out when you need the full height of the cupboard. The outer side panels and the inside of the doors have a plain wood-effect finish, so the fluting stays on the front where you see it.
Two finishes
Oak is a light, warm wood-effect grain. It suits a pale hallway or a Scandi-style dining room, and keeps a small space feeling bright. Walnut is a rich brown wood effect, warmer and slightly more formal, and looks best against a light or green wall where its colour can stand out. Both have the same gold-tone handles.
Where it works
The Berwick's product pages suggest a dining room, a living room or a hallway. At 80cm wide and 38cm deep it fits an alcove, a short wall beside a door or the space at the end of a kitchen, and its 79cm top is a good height for a lamp, a mirror above it or a tray of drinks.
Living with it
Wipe the surfaces with a soft, lightly damp cloth and dry them. A soft brush gets the dust out of the fluting.
Other sideboards
The Wetherby is the same width with open slatted doors. For more storage, the Eversley is 119cm wide with drawers, and the Caldermere is 160cm. Our guide to choosing a sideboard sets all four side by side.
