Ainswick160cm Storage Console Table

A long, simple console with a strong architectural shape: a slim square-edged top on two broad block supports, with an open space beneath the centre. Lift the middle of the top and four hidden compartments take the keys, post and small things a hallway collects, while the top stays clear.

The shape

The Ainswick is built from three simple blocks: a broad rectangular support at each end and a slim top running across them, with a deeper fascia under the centre. Beneath that fascia is open space, so for all its solid ends the table does not look heavy. There are no handles and no decoration; the grain of the finish does the work.

Storage in the top

Most consoles keep their storage in drawers. The Ainswick keeps it in the top. Lift the central section and there are four separate compartments underneath, for keys, post, chargers, sunglasses and the other small things that otherwise end up scattered across a hall table. The two end sections stay fixed while the lid is up, so a lamp or a plant at either end can stay where it is. Close the lid and the top is one clean surface again.

Long and slim

At 160cm wide it is one of our longest consoles, made for a long hallway wall, a landing, or the back of a large sofa. At only 30cm deep it keeps that length without pushing out into the room, which matters in a hall where people walk past with bags and coats.

At 85cm high it is also taller than most console tables. That brings the top closer to hand height as you come in, and leaves a good amount of room underneath for a low bench, baskets or a pair of stools.

Two finishes

Natural Wood is a warm golden-brown with darker grain running across the top and the supports. It sits easily with textured plaster, woven accents and soft neutral colours. Black is a charcoal-black woodgrain. It turns the Ainswick's block shape into a strong, simple silhouette, and it looks crisp against a pale wall, as the photographs show.

Where it works

The product pages suggest a hallway or a living room. In a hall it gives you a long landing spot and hidden storage at once. In a living room it suits a long wall under a large picture or a mirror, or the back of a sofa where you want a shelf for lamps and books.

Other consoles with storage

The Caldermere hides its storage behind sliding tambour doors at 100cm wide, and the Hartleigh is a compact 71cm with two drawers. Our guide to console table sizes covers how to measure your hall. Or browse all the console tables.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the Ainswick?

160cm wide, 30cm deep and 85cm high. Both finishes are the same size.

Where is the storage?

In the top. The central section lifts up to reveal four separate compartments, for keys, post and other small everyday things. The two end sections stay in place while it is open, so you can leave a lamp or a plant at either end.

Is it tall for a console table?

A little. At 85cm it is taller than most consoles, which tend to sit around 75cm to 80cm. That puts the top nearer hand height as you come in, and gives more space underneath for a bench, baskets or a pair of stools.

Which finish should I choose?

Natural Wood is a warm golden-brown with darker grain, and suits textured plaster, woven pieces and soft neutral colours. Black is a charcoal-black woodgrain that gives the block shape a crisper, more graphic outline against a pale wall.
